WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

PILOT PROJECT – BUSUA, GHANA

focus of the project

  • Comprehensive waste management system
  • Raising awareness among community members
  • Promotion of environmentally friendly actions
  • Monthly community cleanup events
  • Integration of social and economic factors
  • Reproducibility

Problem

In Ghana, plastic is used in large quantities but often not disposed of properly. This leads to environmental problems, water pollution, air pollution due to improper waste incineration and damage to agriculture. The consequences of this are not only fatal for nature, but also for humans. The resulting health complaints include malaria, risk of respiratory infections, heart disease and lung cancer.

Solution

We develop a comprehensive waste management system, raise awareness among community members and promote environmentally friendly practices. Monthly community cleanups are part of our strategy. Project replicability is promoted by integrating economic and social factors.

planing

We started with a community survey and submitted a project proposal to the U.S. Embassy in Ghana. Working with stakeholders, we defined clear goals. The inclusion of economic and social factors favors replicability, increases impact, and makes the project attractive to international philanthropic funders.

implementation

Our measures include the introduction of color-coded garbage bags for households, the establishment of 15 waste collection points (each covering 50 households) and the operation of a central recycling facility with separation and composting facilities. At the same time, we are raising community awareness and conducting regular cleanups.

expected results

We create jobs and develop skilled workers, promote public hygiene and health through awareness and education, produce organic fertilizer through composting, and advocate for environmental protection through sustainable practices. Our innovative approach to waste management is also promoted in schools. Together, we can rid Busua of plastic waste and promote sustainable living.
